How to pitch a story to Rest of World

Rest of World’s stories aim to connect the dots across a rapidly evolving digital world, through on-the-ground reporting in places typically overlooked and underestimated. We cover most of the countries outside the West, with a focus and presence in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.

In 2025, Rest of World is focused on four key coverage areas:

  1. EV Revolution: The economic and environmental impact of the mainstream adoption of electric vehicles. Stories in this beat will focus on local solutions, global competition for leadership and its outcome, environmental impact, and key decision-makers.
  2. China Outside China: Chinese innovation, competition, and cross-cultural friction changing rules of global tech and what it means for the world. Stories in this beat will focus on tech rivalries and shifting alliances, the transformation of cultural norms, and the Chinese tech giants and rising startups.
  3. Tech Giants: The efforts of U.S. tech heavyweights to grow their businesses outside the West. Stories in this beat will focus on Meta, Alphabet, Starlink, Uber, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon (including Amazon Web Services) — and how they’re winning or losing in emerging markets. Stories can also explore the relationships between Western giants, regional governments, and businesses, or novel use cases of Western tech platforms.
  4. Innovation: The billion-dollar ideas built outside the West amid political instability, economic uncertainty, and inconsistent systems — and what success and failure costs. Stories in this beat will look at investment in new technology, key people, geography and infrastructure that boost innovation, efforts to solve problems, and what failures look like.

We welcome ideas for submissions as pitches of 300 words or less, in the following template. Pitches should always be pre-reported, and can be sent to the relevant editor listed on our About Us page.

Working Headline: One sentence that best sums up the story idea
Synopsis: In no more than 300 words, explain the following: What’s the story angle? Why is this story important? What’s the broader context or background info that supports your thesis? Why should we report this story now? Has the story been covered before — if yes, what has been reported and where? How does your pitch add to existing coverage? How long would the story be and when can you deliver?
Sources: Who will you speak to for this story? List at least six, including company, workers, government, policy, academics, and others.
