NA

Hi, everyone! I’m building out Reader’s Digest’s freelance pool, and I’m looking for strong writers, thorough researchers and all-around-excellent journalists in a variety of categories.

They include …

Essay writers: We’re looking for strong, voice-y writers who can explore family relationships and the challenges within them, differing perspectives from each generation, strengthening interpersonal connections, and “I tried X” sort of stories related to the aforementioned topics. For the last one, as an example, we might do a story on how you limited your screen time to an hour a day, or swapped out your iPhone for a flip phone, and what happened. Or maybe you’re a Gen Z’er who has a best friend who’s a Boomer or member of the Silent Generation. (If you have experience with any of those, please let me know, though we’re obviously not limiting topics to just that!)

Writers for trend-response stories: For these timely stories, we are looking for writers who have expertise in certain topics (travel, science, home, entertainment, sports, politics, etc.) and can write compelling, concise and clean copy on a relatively tight deadline (depending on the topic, this could be same day, overnight or a few days). But these newsy stories have an extra twist: They should be voice-y, so strong writers who can have some fun with these topics are essential here as well.
* NOTE: If quick isn’t your thing, that’s OK too. We also have stories on these topics with longer lead times as well, of course!

Journalists with a strong background in research, especially within specialized topics: These writers can sort through the noise and put a complicated topic into context for explainer-type pieces. These pieces might focus on heavier topics like politics, government, money and history, or lighter ones like TikTok Trends, entertainment, etiquette and wellness. Solid experience with these topics is essential.

We are open to both new voices and established ones, and rates will vary depending on topic and length.

If you fit the bill for any of the above and have direct experience writing stories like this, please reach out with your information and clips. (Please pull out some of your favorite, and relevant, clips, in addition to a website if you’re including one.) Also, please note at the top of the email what your specialties are so I can easily sort these responses.

My email is dawn.yanek@tmbi.com. Thanks, and I’m looking forward to chatting with you soon!
