The Academy of Management (AOM) is the preeminent professional association for management and organization scholars. Our worldwide members are professors and PhD students who teach and conduct research in management. We offer a platform for exchange around the creation and dissemination of rigorous and relevant knowledge pertaining to management scholarship, teaching, and practice. We do this by harnessing the power of our global members as volunteers to advance the professional development and careers of management scholars in all stages of the academic lifecycle.
The Freelance Writer / Independent Contractor (IC) is responsible for writing news briefs—articles in the 250- to 450-word range—for a new AOM product aimed at reaching new audiences through short-form textual summaries and briefs, preferable with a news hook or tie-in to a trend relating to careers or the workplace.
In this contractual role, you will interview graduate students, researchers, and professors who study organizations and management and are AOM members, writing compelling precise and high-quality content, and making revisions to submitted drafts as necessary. You will need to commit to a minimum number of news briefs articles per month, preferably no fewer than 10.
- Write, clear, concise, consistent and compelling content for AOM Today’s broad global audience interested in business news and workplace/career-development topics.
- Interview AOM Scholars—primarily graduate students, researchers, and professors who study organizations and management and are AOM members, most of whom have previously published academic research articles in an AOM scholarly journal (an AOM editor will make introductions to AOM Scholars, so no source development or outreach will be necessary).
- Record audio and video recordings to share with the managing editor, and produce high-quality copy from the transcriptions of those interviews (while multiple news briefs/articles may be written on a single topic/angle/subject-matter, each quote may only be used in one news brief/article, never reused).
- Follow the editorial and style guidelines provided by the AOM Today managing editor.
- Proofread and correct spelling and grammar errors before submitting rough drafts.
- Make revisions and do rewrites to submitted drafts as necessary until the copy is deemed to be publishable by the manager editor and the AOM Scholar quoted in each news brief.
Plagiarism and use of a generative-AI software programs or applications such as ChatGPT are strictly prohibited, and no payment will be rendered for a news brief/article containing text taken or generated from the aforementioned.
Education and Experience:
- At least two years of professional writing experience (AOM editors will review published clips)
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or English preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Thorough command of written English and familiarity with common style guides (AP, Chicago, etc.)
- Ability to create written content from interviews with AOM scholars.
- Commitment to meeting minimum monthly content output by agreed-upon deadlines.
- Ability to conduct, record, and transcribe interviews via Zoom or Teams.
- Ability to translate academic/scholarly language and other jargon into plain English/laymen’s terms.
- Ability to understand, appreciate, and gear articles toward the interests, preferences, and needs of a global audience interested in business news, workplace trends, and career-development advice.
